map VictoriaVictoria

Capital: Melbourne.

Population: 4.8 million.

The locals: friendlier then their northern (Sydney) counterparts, most Melbournians will go out of their way to make your life that little bit easier. Out in the sticks, you will find that Victoria has more then its fair share friendly locals who are happy to give you the insider tips on where to go and what to do in their neck of the woods.

Tourists come here because: it is Australia's cultural heart.

And....... it is where they make the TV-series Neighbours.

Inside info: watch the waves at Cheviot Beach near Portsea, where on December 17, 1967 the then Prime Minister Harold Holt, went out for a swim and never came back.

Top 3 'things to do'

1. Watching an Aussie Rules match: you could say they are a little passionate about their footy down in Victoria. head to the MCG and shout yourself hoarse.

penguins on Phillip Island3. The penguins on Phillip Island: every night hundreds of little penguins waddle out of the ocean to check out the visiting tourists. The best time to visit is at sunset, when the penguins cross Summerland Beach to return to their sand-dune burrows. After a day fishing for food in the waters surrounding Phillip Island, the penguins make their way across Summerland Beach in groups. This delightful event is commonly known as the "penguin parade".
