map Northern TerritoryNorthern Territory

Capital: Darwin.

Population: 173.500.

The locals: the Northern Territory has the largest percentage of Aboriginal inhabitants in Australia, so this is absolutely the place to learn a little about Australia's first people. There is also a far sprinkling of what can only be described as 'rednecks' in the Territory, complete with mullets and flannel shirts. The cities, especially tropical Darwin, are transient places and to be considered a 'Territorian' you have to have survived a few Wet Seasons. There is a significant hippy population too.

Tourists come here because: Uluru (or Ayers Rock).

Top 3 'things to do'

1. Learn about Aboriginal culture: the territory is easily the best place to learn about Australia's Indigenous people.

Uluru (Ayers Rock)2. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: or 'Ayers Rock' and the 'Olga's' to you at the back not paying attention. OK, so they are only rocks, but you will find none better, especially at sunset.

3. Go hot air ballooning in Alice Springs: the best way to appreciate the Center's amazing landscape is from the air.
