The locals: Canberra has what is possibly one of the worlds largest populations of people who don't actually live there, if that makes sense. That is the politicians, diplomats and all those other people such as university students. The three people who actually live there permanently are quite nice though.

Tourists come here because: it is the national capital, or if you are an art or science or history buff because it has got heaps of galleries and museums, so for the real museum or gallery addict it is a bit like paradise.

Inside info: thanks to some liberal laws, Canberra is somewhat of a Mecca for those who favor slightly deviant behavior. Take Fyshwick's myriad of porn stores and fireworks shops. And the Australian Capital Territory's slightly more lax drug laws. And the fact that bars and clubs can stay open as late as they please.
