Chromosomes: The Bricks Of Mother Nature

Chromosomes are often called the bricks of nature, containing the complete genetic material of a species; they are the blueprint of all life on this planet. Most cats and also the domestic cat (Felis catus) have 38 chromosomes, but there are also cats that have 36 chromosomes; the Ocelot (Felis pardalis) and the Tiger cat (Felis tigrina) have 36 chromosomes.

Of the 38 chromosomes from the domestic cat 36 are ordinairy chromosomes, but 2 chromosomes are special and called the sex chromosomes.

There are two kinds of sex chromosomes, the X-chromosome and the Y-chromosome. Chromosomes always operate in pairs and the two sex chromosomes are also making one pair.

Male cats have one X-chromosome and one Y-chromosome making a pair (XY). Female cats have two X-chromosomes making a pair (XX).
